Multiplication Patterns (Tricks)

All of third grade is doing stellar job on their multiplication table memorization! Here are some tricks for memorizing some of the facts. Hope this helps and see you tomorrow!

is just doubling the number. The same as adding the number to itself.
2×2=4, 2×3=6, 2×4=8, etc.
So the pattern is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
(And once you remember those, you also know 3×2, 4×2, 5×2, etc., right?)

has a pattern: 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. It ends in either 0 or 5.

has a pattern, too: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90
Now, notice how the "ones" place goes down: 9,8,7,6, ...? And at the same time, the "tens" place goes up: 1,2,3,...? Well, your hands can help!
Example: to multiply 9 by 8: hold your 8th finger down, and you can count "7" and "2" ... the answer is 72

10× is maybe the easiest of them all ... just put a zero after it. 10×2=20, 10×3=30, 10×4=40, etc.

11× is mostly easy: from 11×2 to 11×9 you just put the two digits together. 11×2=22, 11×3=33, ..., 11×9=99.

Jump Rope for Heart!

We had such a great day with Jump Rope for Heart! Can you believe our student body raised the most money they have since Coach Reker has implemented the program?!?! The top two fundraisers were able to present The American Heart Association with a check of all the earnings. Be sure to check the newspaper daily to see their picture.
The students jumped for 30 minutes today to raise awareness on heart health. Here are some pictures and video from our event.
We even had some of our kiddos give us their best dance moves...
Mrs. Melendez from 5B was a great sport today and was duct taped by her class because they were the top earners in the school.
But of course our sweet Andrew, her son, looked like he wanted to get in on the fun...
So 5B invited him up to join in...
The class cheering him on sure helped...
We had a great day! Thank you so much for all your support with this incredible cause! See you tomorrow. :)

Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases

Here are some notes that highlight what we did in class today. The students were asked to come up with 10 prepositional phrases. They may use their Prepositional Phrase Jingle to help identify prepositions to start with. They will need to come up with the corresponding noun that will serve as their object of the preposition. They should label each word with the correct abbreviation and put their prepositional phrases in parentheses. Hope these notes help!

Division

We've been working on division in 3rd Grade! Here's a recap of our division vocabulary.
We've learned to divide items equally in groups, but more importantly we've witnessed how our multiplication facts help us in division.
Here is a table much like our multiplication tables that might help with division. Hope it helps. Enjoy!

Multiplication

I'm so proud of the progress that the students are making with their multiplication timed tests! I want to thank Alex A. and her mom, Natalia for providing some additional resources to help study and practice for the timed tests. Hope they help! Enjoy!

The following website will generate a different 60 problem drill of any chosen factor each time.

Summarizing

We've been learning about summarizing in Reading.
Many students confuse summarizing and retelling the story. While a retell is a play by play of all the sequential events in the story, a summary is a brief overview of the story as a whole. Covering the beginning, middle, and end of the story allow the summarizer to grasp all the main ideas. Here is a good tool to help weed out unnecessary detail...

Physical vs. Chemical Change

Our last unit in Science had to deal with the many elements that we have and how they are combined to make substances we use everyday. We concluded observing how chemical compounds can become altered during a chemical change. I am so proud of how the kids did with this unit. Their assessments were very impressive! We will begin our next unit on Physical Changes this week. Here is a little preview of the difference between Physical and Chemical Changes.

Chemical Change Slideshow

Today we learned about Chemical Change. We visited Mrs. Bertelson for a lab showing how a Chemical Change works. Below is an interesting slide show that illustrates how the change takes place. This will help prepare for our test on Friday! Hope it helps!

A or An?

Use a before words that start with a consonant sound and an before words that start with a vowel sound. Other letters can also be pronounced either way. Just remember it is the sound that governs whether you use a or an, not the actual first letter of the word.

CAUTION: Jokes ahead

We learned about Atoms and Molecules of Elements and Compounds. Our first Compound was H20. Many got the jokes after the lesson. :)

Adjectives

We worked on classifying adjectives today in Shurley. Here is a scan of the notes we worked with in class. Hopefully these help clarify any questions you may have, as well as show you how the adjective fits in our "Question and Answer Flow."

New Semester!

What a great first day we had here in 3A yeesterday! Your kids came back refreshed and eager to learn. I sure did miss them over the break! A few things to keep in mind for this new semester:
  • Please continue to check planners daily as they will continue to reflect their assignments and classwork.
  • We will begin to write in ALL cursive starting next week. This will help prepare the students for 4th grade next year.
  • Multiplication will be a big focus this semester. We will work to memorize facts up to 12. Flash cards are great helpers for this skill. If your child has an iPad, iPhone, or other tablet, there are many fun apps out there that can also reinforce these skills. I will also post some helpful places to go for multiplication help in the Resources section of my website.
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! Stay warm today! God Bless you all!

-Mrs. Owen
