Field Day Tomorrow!

Hey everyone! We had a great Picnic Day and the fun will continue tomorrow with our Annual Field Day. Mrs. Reker and Ms. Amanda have been working so hard on the activities and we are very excited. We will begin outside in the morning around 9 a.m. and end in time for lunch. Students are able to be in free dress, including shorts as they will be active. The shorts should be appropriate length and I would suggest not wearing anything that you don't mind getting a little dirty. There is the potential for water games, so I would also suggest bringing a towel and a change of clothes for after. Parents are more than welcome to come and watch their children. If you plan on taking your child home after the festivities, please be sure to have your child check in with me first and sign them out in the office. We are looking forward to tomorrow. Don't forget the sunscreen and possibly a hat!

Picnic Day Tomorrow!

Hello All! Tomorrow is our Picnic Day. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will walk to Haley Park (Behind the Museum of the Southwest) for fun and lunch. We will leave school at 9:30 to head to the park and will enjoy the day there until around 12:00 p.m. Parents are more than welcome to come so long as they walk with the students to the park or meet us there. Students are not able to ride to the park with parents or ride back home with them. All students must go to and from the park as a class for safety and keeping track of all our students. If you would like to check your child out for the day following Picnic Day, you may. Please just meet us back at school and sign them out in the office. Students must have a signed permission form by a parent and be in school uniform (but may bring a cap to wear for the sun). Please have them bring a sack lunch (unless they ordered from the Sanchez Family) and a water bottle with their name on it. If you would like to bring them lunch, that is fine as well. We will eat around 11:00 a.m. Haley Park is a new venue for us as our "go-to" Dennis the Menace Park is closed for renovations. The park has limited equipment, but a vast space. Please feel free to bring playground equipment to play with. Don't forget to apply some sunscreen before school! Thank you all so much and we're looking forward to tomorrow!

Last Monday!

History and Origins of May Crowning

Related image
A May Crowning is a traditional devotion in which an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary is crowned, sometimes with a wreath of flowers. It may be done within the context of a Mass or in a paraliturgy outside the Mass in which there might be Scripture readings, a homily, singing of hymns, devotional prayers such as the rosary, a procession, etc. This act of filial devotion is done in the springtime, during the month of May to recognize Mary as Queen of Heaven, Queen of Earth and Queen of Peace.
The Easter time hymn Regina Caeli (O Queen of Heaven) invokes the Blessed Mother to rejoice in the resurrection of her Son. Throughout the Easter season this hymn is sung morning, noon and night in place of the Angelus, and is also the final hymn of the day, sung at the conclusion to the Liturgy of the Hours' night prayer. Honoring the Mother of God during Easter is the foundation of our devotion to Mary during May. With the flowers of spring we crown Mary the Queen of Heaven.
Statues and other iconographic images can be "windows into heaven". The crowning of sacred images with herbs and flowers is an ancient tradition. The crowns call to mind the victory wreaths that await the baptized in the fullness of time. All God's children are called to accept their responsibilities as the royal heirs to the throne of heaven.
The 1987 publication of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, "Celebrating the Marian Year," and the "Ceremonial of Bishops" (part IV, 18) include the order for crowning an image of the Blessed Virgin. (cf Seasonal Missalette, April 13, 1998; vol 14, no 5: 94)
Coronation is one form of reverence frequently shown to images of the Blessed Virgin Mary... It is especially from the end of the 16th century that in the West the practice became widespread for the faithful, both religious and laity, to crown images of the Blessed Virgin. The popes not only endorsed this devout custom, but "on many occasions, either personally or through bishop-delegates, carried out the coronation of Marian images." (cf Pius XII, "Ad Caeli Reginam")
The U.S. bishops state: The queen symbol was attributed to Mary because she was a perfect follower of Christ, who is the absolute "crown" of creation. She is the Mother of the Son of God, who is the messianic King. Mary is the Mother of Christ, the Word Incarnate... "he will be great and will be called Son of the Most High; the Lord will give him the throne of his father David; and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end" (Lk 1:32-33). Elizabeth greeted the Blessed Virgin, pregnant with Jesus, as "the mother of my Lord" (Lk 1:41-43). Mary is the perfect follower of Christ. The maid of Nazareth consented to God's plan; she journeyed on the pilgrimage of faith; she listened to God's Word and kept it in her heart; she remained steadfastly in close union with her Son, all the way to the foot of the Cross; she persevered in prayer with the Church. Thus, in an eminent way she won the "crown of righteousness" (2 Tim 4:8), the "crown of life" (Jas 1:12; Rev 2:10), the "crown of glory" (1 Pet 5:4) that is promised to those who follow Christ. May Crowning Attire

Practices have begun for our May Crowning Mass and Ceremony on Friday, May 4th. We hope to see you all there! Here are a few things to keep in mind regarding our Mass attire, as the students are encouraged to wear their "Free Dress Sunday Best."

For the Ladies:
  • A nice dress or skirt would be very appropriate. This is another good occasion to utilize their Easter dresses if they have one.
  • Shoulders must be covered. If a dress is spaghetti strapped or sleeveless, a sweater must be worn over it.
  • Heels or open-toed shoes are okay to wear for the Mass, but must be changed into school shoes after the Mass. Make sure your child is comfortable enough to walk in them as they will move around a bit during the mass and service. No flip flops, beach sandals, or boots may be worn. As stated in the school handbook, no boots of any kind may be worn.
  • Flats and closed toe dress shoes are a wonderful option that may be worn all day.
For the Gentlemen:
  • Slacks are appropriate for this day. No jeans or shorts. If your child does not have slacks, our uniform pants are a wonderful option.
  • Dress shirts and polos are great to wear. If your child would like to wear a tie or sportscoat, that is perfectly fine.
  • Dress shoes or uniform shoes are appropriate for this occasion. As stated in the handbook, no boots of any kind may be worn.
All in all, if you feel it is appropriate enough to wear to the Easter Sunday Service, it is appropriate for May Crowning. If your child would like to stay in their Sunday Best Attire throughout the day, they may. They may also change back into their Mass Uniform if they are uncomfortable being in their Sunday Best all day.

We can't wait to see everyone! Thanks for working so hard with your children at home! It will be a beautiful service.

Lent and Reconciliation

In his Ash Wednesday homily a few years ago, Pope Francis said that Lent is the perfect time to let go of selfish and indifferent attitudes, returning to God with the help of prayer, penance and acts of charity.
“Lent is a beneficial time of pruning from falsity, from worldliness, from indifference: to not think that everything is ok if I am ok; to understand that what counts is not approval, the pursuit of success or consensus, but purity of heart and life,” the Pope said.
It’s a time to rediscover one’s Christian identity, “which is love that serves, not selfishness that uses,” he said.

This is such an awesome thing to remember as we prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation this coming week at school. Each Advent and Lenten season, the students have the opportunity to receive this beautiful Sacrament that reminds us of God's mercy and compassion. Sometimes we may feel anxious or nervous to confess our sins, but it is important to remember that God longs to forgive you. Remember, God knows that you are much more than the worst thing you’ve ever done. Knowing this amazing thing, a few things that you can do to prepare for the Sacrament:
1. Recall the Act of Contrition.
2. Examine your conscience. For example: When I make choices, do I sometimes forget about what God wants me to do? Do I pray everyday? Do I pay attention at Mass? Do I try to see God in others?
Do I listen to my parents and teachers or do I ignore them? Have I made fun of my brothers and sister or my classmates? Do I say, “I’m sorry” to the person I have hurt and “I forgive you” to the person who has hurt me? Do I play fair or do I ever cheat at school or games? Have I taken something that does not belong to me? Do I tell the whole truth? Or do I lie about things to not get in trouble?
Am I jealous of what other people have or do I appreciate all that God has given me? Do I try to do my best in school?
3. Remember, the priest will never tell anyone their sins.
